The law of surrogacy in Armenia
Armenia has allowed surrogacy since 2002.
The intended mother cannot be 53 years old or older. Therefore it is recommended not to start the process after 51 years of age.
Egg and sperm donors may not be anonymous, but in such a case, in addition to the surrogacy contract between the intended parents and the surrogate, it is necessary to sign a donation contract between the intended parents and the sperm/oocyte donor.
Both the donation contract and the surrogacy contract must be sign in front of a notary.
In whose name will the baby be registered once it is born?
In the process of surrogacy in Armenia we do not obtain a sentence but a birth certificate with the apostille of the Hague. The child will come in the name of the father, and the intended mother will have to adopt the child once in the parents’ country of origin.
A local support representative who speaks your language
Our staff will assist you in our office in Yerevan (Armenia) in your language (Spanish, French, Italian, German, English, Portugal). In a process where legal issues are mixed with medical issues, it is important to speak the same language and to understand each other. With Gestlife, you will never feel like a stranger in a foreign country.
It is something that seems obvious, when with some agencies you are lucky enough to speak to an advisor in your language, but as soon as you sign the contract, the rest of the staff do not speak it, and you will have to defend yourself in English, or in another language, with translators. Make sure if you talk to other agencies that this will not happen. A year and a half (the length of a process) having to speak in other languages is very stressful.

Special characteristics of the country
Armenia in a country with only 2.9 million inhabitants, of which 64.5% are ethnic Kazakhs, 22.3% Russians and 13.2% other ethnicities. The ethnic Kazakhs are a mixture of primitive Turkic and Mongolian tribes. About 60 % of the population is Muslim, which makes surrogacy unlikely.
Although Armenia is a secular constitutional state, the Christian faith plays a major role in its history and in the identity of the Armenian people.
Ethnic Armenians make up 97.9 % of the population. Yazidis make up 1.3%, Russians 0.5%. Other minorities include Assyrians, Ukrainians, Greeks, Kurds, Georgians, and Belarusians. There are also small communities of Vlachs, Mordvins, Ossetians, Udi, and Tats. There are also minorities of Poles and Caucasian Germans, although they suffered forced Russification in Soviet times.
During the Soviet era, Azeris were historically the second largest population in the country (about 10% in 1939.88) However, due to hostilities with neighbouring Azerbaijan in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh, virtually all of them emigrated from Armenia. Conversely, Armenia received a large influx of Armenian refugees from Azerbaijan, thus giving a homogenous Armenian population. According to the United Nations Population Fund, the population in Armenia will decrease.
The donors are also from the country, and if we want a more Caucasian phenotype, we must use a donor from another country, which increases the cost of a program.
- This information is an indicative summary of the legislation in your country regarding surrogacy. We recommend that you do not carry out any procedure without first having spoken to one of our legal advisors, and the company is not responsible for any actions that parents may carry out on their own without the direct advice of our lawyers.
